TiVo Monkey’s With Service Rates; Outcome Confusing

Tivo Thumbs DownTivo Thumbs DownTivo Thumbs Down

Now, it’s a little early to judge, but the news about TiVo’s rate change doesn’t sound grand. What upsets me is that TiVo doesn’t seem to be coughing up any clear information on what this all means to their current customers. But, before I get ahead of myself, here’s what I know.

They only sell long-term plans now (1,2 or 3 years), and bundle them with a “free” box. Those rates have gone to $19.95, $14.95, and $12.95 respectively for service, an agreement and an 80-hour series 2 box.

Now, from Engadget’s reporting, it sounds like this rate change also applies to current prepaid customers (that part I don’t get…if you’ve already prepaid, then how can they up your monthly rate?).

Here’s where I fall in. I bought my TiVo box at the former retail value, and signed up for a $12.95 month-to-month plan (no “free” box…I own mine). I can’t find anything, anywhere suggesting that my rate and plan is either affected or not. If, by chance, my rate is affected I’m looking at a 65% increase. I don’t really see why they would have to continue offering me the service at my current rate, as I am in no sort of contract with them.

The bad news is that TiVo is to subscribers what crack is to addicts. I’d probably frown a bit every month, but would keep the service all the same. I can’t really imagine life with out “b’dupe, b’dupe, b’dupe” (my attempt at trying to type out that sweet, sweet TiVo sound). And, if I did cancel, I’d be stuck with an expensive box with pretty lights.

A rock and a hard place, I guess. But, as I said, I really don’t know. Please correct me if I’m misled here. Thanks!
