Why Net Neutrality Matters

340x_nnprev

The above graphic is not real, lemme say that first. But if the ISPs had their way, they’d love to sell you this. And this is why net neutrality, the set of proposed rules to keep all Internet traffic equal, is so important. Because the Internet should not be like cable. The Internet should be like, well, like the Internet – a conduit of equal opportunity. [via Gizmodo]

GOP’s Got a Brand New Site, Sort Of

GOPsite

So, the GOP has a brand new site, eh? It’s a pretty slick design with plenty of righty-tighty propaganda. But I couldn’t help notice the similarities with another fairly well-known site:

barackobamasite

Art Director: “I know, let’s just take a proven political site and slap some red on there.”
Client: “Brilliant. And make sure the ‘Donate’ button is all shiny and glossy.”
Art Director: “I like where you’re going with this.”

So, now that the election is over and all, I guess the GOP felt it was high-time to join the whole Web 2.Whatever/Social Media/UGC bandwagon and flex its contemporary design muscles – with the help of a bit of cut and paste.

Mom and Dad’s New Puppy

image

Mom sent along a shot of their new puppy, which they’ll pick up on Nov 1. He is absolutely adorable, and I know he will get away with murder. I’m not sure if Mom and Dad have thought of names yet, but based on the photo, I’m casting my vote for “Theodore Rudolf Goodwin III, GBE”. That’s the most formal and blue-blood puppy pose I’ve ever seen. :)

Letterman’s Confession

In case you missed it, here’s Letterman’s incredible confession and his recount of the grizzly extortion story. Pretty remarkable stuff for network (you see this kinda stuff on cable all the time – haha).

Carl Sagan Auto-Tuned

My buddy Andrew posted this link, and I thought I’d share the vid here. It’s Carl Sagan’s videos auto-tuned on top of an audio track. The whole thing is pretty oddly poetic. Oh Carl, you were the best!!

We Camped Here

Julie and I thought we’d try and get some camping and hot sprining in this weekend. So, Saturday morning, she and I packed up just about everything but the kitchen sink (we were fortunate in that regard, as I shall explain in a bit) and headed west. The MINI wouldn’t have come even close to hauling all we wanted to bring + the dog. It could have done one or the other, but not both. Fortunately, her Mazda 3 is a bit more generous on space. The bench seat, folded away, made a perfect platform for Murph and the trunk was just big enough to hold our packs, gigunda tent, cooler, doggie goods and we managed to get the firewood in there somewhere too.

I had found a few potential campgrounds online on Saturday morning in the Steamboat Springs vicinity. What with the mountains being where they are an all, we had to head south to I-70, through the Eisenhower tunnel, and then back north again when we reached Silverthorne. It was a stunning drive, if perhaps a bit lengthier than we had bargained for. When we reached Steamboat, we found that the Forest Service Information Center was closed on weekends, so Blackberries in hand, we tried to figure out where best to camp (and how to get there) by ourselves.

Google’s Take on Bing

Because I’m the kind of guy who looks up the word “dictionary” in the dictionary, I decided to search for “Bing” (Microsoft’s newly named and much-lauded search enging) on Google.

Here is the second result in the list:

A blown transformer knocked out power to the entire building, which is home to theBing Travel servers. This is isolated to Bing Travel only, and there has

Of course, the travel page is no longer down (I hadn’t even heard about the fire in Seattle), but Google did take the time to cache their “temporary unvailable page”.

Sorry, Bing Travel is currently unavailable

A fire occurred at Fisher Plaza in downtown Seattle just after midnight on Friday morning, July 3. A blown transformer knocked out power to the entire building, which is home to the Bing Travel servers. This is isolated to Bing Travel only, and there has been no impact to any other aspects of Bing. We’re hard at work to restore service following this unexpected event and appreciate your patience.

In the meantime, you may use Microsoft’s travel partner, Orbitz, for your travel needs.

So, maybe Google’s having a bit of fun by holding onto that bit of oopsydaisy at the top of their results, or, more likely, the Internet’s just doin what the Internet does and Google doesn’t really give a damn. Either way, I thought it was pretty cute.

PS When you searh “Google” on Bing, you just get 1 result:

Google Inc. is an American public corporation, earning revenue from advertising related to its Internet search, e-mail, online mapping…

And that’s it. I think these two are going to have fun poking each other.
